Diabetic Eye Exam
A diabetic eye exam is a comprehensive eye exam performed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist on a person with diabetes mellitus. The purpose of the exam is to screen for diabetic retinopathy, which is a leading cause of blindness. The exam includes a visual acuity test, an examination of the retina, and a dilated fundus exam.
Diabetic retinopathy is the showing cause of blindness in developed countries for adults 20 to 74 years. 20-55% of patients diagnosed with retinopathy have advanced disease, putting them at significant risk of vision loss.
